“I’m popping outside for two minutes — I haven’t got my keys.”

Most readers will know the small irritation: stepping out to the bins, the post, the garden centre delivery, the dog — with no key in pocket and the front door determined to slam shut behind you. The household stratagem of wedging a stone, a shoe, a folded newspaper into the threshold is, of course, charming. It is also a freely advertised invitation to anyone passing on the pavement.

With biometric entry the story ends differently. One steps outside, allows the door to close fully and to lock as designed, and returns when ready. A touch of the finger at the reader, and one is home. No key. No stone. No nervous glance towards the gate. The residence is more secure, not less, precisely because one no longer has to leave it standing open.

The master’s arrival raises the kitchen lighting to forty percent, sets climate to twenty-one degrees, opens the integral blinds in the principal rooms and queues a discreet jazz programme in the family room. The lady of the house has her own scene — classical playlist, scented candle scene on the smart switches, a low-warmth wash in the snug. The children unlock with their own prints to their own scenes — the parents’ private rooms remain locked. Each finger is, in effect, a different residence.

Discreet announcement

“Welcome home, James.”

A spoken welcome through one’s Sonos, Crestron or Control4 audio — addressed by name, in the room one is in. Useful in larger residences — the rest of the household knows who has come in without anyone having to call up the stair. The voice, the room, the volume and the wording are all configurable; mute the announcement entirely if one prefers silence.

Time-bound access

The cleaner. The dog walker. The gardener.

A staff print works only between, say, nine and one on Tuesday. A relative’s print is permitted weekends only. A holiday house-sitter receives access for a fortnight, after which their print is automatically retired. Every entry is recorded with name, time and (if specified) routed to one’s phone as an inconspicuous notification. The end of the keyhole-under-the-flowerpot era, decisively.

Climate & comfort

Each finger, a different residence.

Each profile carries its own climate set-point — nineteen for the master, twenty-two for the lady of the house, eighteen in the gym. Underfloor zones lift to the right temperature only in rooms that person is likely to occupy. Pair with the residence’s presence-detection logic and the heating bill is no larger for it.

Light, blinds, intelligent glass

A single tap on the mobile app unlocks the residence from anywhere with a data signal the airport, the office, abroad on holiday. Useful for letting a courier into the porch, a contractor into the workshop, a relative into the kitchen door whilst one is travelling. Connection encrypted end-to-end via the Microsoft Azure cloud; one’s biometric data never leaves the device.

A tidy log of every entry — who, when, by which entrance, whether by finger, app or override. Export weekly or monthly to PDF for one’s records, the household manager, or in the unhappy event of an incident, for the police or the insurer.

Sovereign cloud, no subscription

The mobile application is provided without subscription — one’s commission includes lifetime access for as many users as one wishes.

Cloud infrastructure runs upon Microsoft Azure UK and EU regions. Encrypted at rest, encrypted in transit, GDPR-aligned, and engineered against the casual ransomware now plaguing certain consumer smart-lock platforms.

Indeed — that is precisely how the Connoisseur’s Collection is intended to be specified. Aluminium and uPVC windows, bifolds, sliding doors, entrance and internal doors, conservatory roofs, rooflights and rear extensions are all provided under one proposal, one programme of works and one ten-year guarantee.

What, in essence, is switchable smart glass?

A liquid-crystal (LC / PDLC) glazing that resolves from crystalline to opaque at the touch of a finger. We specify it as a sealed insulated unit within our aluminium frames — no retrofit film, no peeling, no compromise. It speaks fluently to Lutron, Crestron, Control4, KNX and Apple Home.

What is the eKey dLine?

Are integral blinds a worthwhile refinement?

Decidedly so. Sealed between the two panes of the insulated unit, they collect neither dust nor stray hairs, never tangle, and accept manual, motorised or smart-home control. Particularly considered on south-facing bifolds and lantern rooflights.

Do you work alongside architects and principal contractors?

Regularly. We furnish NBS-format specifications, elevation drawings, U-value calculations and Part L compliance documentation. Supply-only terms are available to the trade upon application.

What lead times might one expect?

Bifolds and windows: four to six weeks. Conservatory roofs: six to eight weeks. Glass-box rear extensions: ten to fourteen weeks. A priority service is available to compress the glazing element to two or three weeks where the schedule demands it.
